Low Vision Products - Q&A with Precision Vision

Why are low vision aids important and how do they directly benefit the patient?

In order to understand the importance of Low Vision aids, it is important to look at the quality of life many Low Vision patients have prior to being properly fit with a Low Vision solution by an Eye Care Professional.

Unfortunately, many Low Vision patients are told by their primary eye care provider that "nothing can be done" for them. These words are more damaging than can be imagined as many patients suffer from depression as a result of this news and give up hope that there may be a solution for them as they assume they will go blind. In a world wide study sponsored by Pfizer and the World Glaucoma Association, twice as any people were afraid of going blind as compared to those who were afraid of a premature death or heart disease. This is very unfortunate for these Low Vision patients since many of these individuals become home bound, fearing to leave their home and are forced to rely on friends and family to help them with many personal and private daily tasks such as reading their mail and balancing their check book.

The reality of the situation is very few people who have a degenerative eye disease actually go completely blind. While they may lose sight in the central area of their vision with the proper training, lighting, and magnification can return some of their independence and this is what makes Low Vision aids and solutions important.  

How is the Precision Vision product line differentiated in terms of quality and functionality?

As Baby Boomers have been aging there has been an increase in demand for Low Vision aids. Unfortunately, many of the products introduced in the the market have not been designed with the attention to detail that is essential to providing a high quality Low Vision aid. For example, one of the most overlooked components of an illuminated magnifier is the source of the illumination, as this is just as important as the quality and magnification of the lens. The advantage of Precision Vision's low vision product line is that each manufacturer and each item from that manufacturer was specifically chosen for its high quality and functionality, allowing an eye care professional to customize each solution based on an individual patient's unique needs. 

For example, the Schwiezer line of magnifiers is available in three different illumination levels. While having multiple illumination levels is not new, Schweizer is, however, the first manufacturer to precisely calibrate each illumination level and print the level of intensity on the handle so that an eye care professional knows exactly what to expect. Other manufacturers have simply stated that one magnifier is brighter than the other but this is the first time a manufacturer has committed to consistency and Schweizer is setting the bar for the industry.

Can lower quality low vision products actually be a detriment to patient health? Or can lower quality products be effectively substituted? What are the drawbacks?

The proof is in the pudding when it comes to lower quality Low Vision products. Many times a higher magnification is prescribed when a patient is having an issue seeing properly with their existing magnifier. But there are three elements that must be evaluated when prescribing a magnifier: Training, Magnification, and Illumination. If the magnifier offers an incandescent or even a standard LED, the illumination that is created causes hot spots or areas that cannot be seen through the lens. Typically, when patients who have used these lower quality Low Vision products try a High Quality product such as a Schweizer magnifier with an SMD LED, they see the difference immediately making it very easy for an eye care professional to illustrate the value of the product to the patient.
