Of all alternative vision tests, Tumbling "E" charts are one of the most accurate. Although Landolt "C" vision tests are considered the "gold standard" by many, Tumbling "E" charts are nearly equal. The Tumbling "E" uses just one optotype shown in 4 different positions. This makes testing easier because patients, who may not speak the same language or may not speak at all, simply have to gesture the direction they see each optotype facing.
