Because of the use of only one optotype, Tumbling "E" charts are great for testing illiterate patients. Also, Tumbling "E" tests are used for testing patients that are not familiar with the Roman alphabet. These patients merely have to signal or gesture which direction they see the "E" facing. Testing is easy and more accurate even with no verbalization.
