The design of the Tumbling "E" is similar to that of grating stripes. This is helpful in the detection of Against the Rule Astigmatism. Also, the Tumbling "E" chart has proven to be nearly equal to the "gold standard" Landolt "C" chart when it comes to visual acuity thresholds. Tumbling "E" charts are useful for testing patients of multiple ages and languages.
