PV Numbers are calibrated to Sloan optotype standards. Each PV Number is chosen because of specific size, design, difficulty, and its blur at threshold. Also, number charts give the option of testing multiple types of patients. Even patients not familiar with the Roman alphabet can identify numerals, making this a universal test.
