HOTV optotypes are great for preliterate pediatric testing. Even though the child may not be able to read, with the use of the response key, testing is quick and easy. The child must simply be briefly taught the four letters and instructed to point to the one they see each time on the response key. This test is useful for children that have advanced from symbol charts but are not literate yet.
