Contrast Sensitivity and Visual Acuity are very different parts of normal vision. Visual acuity measures the ability to see high contrast items, mostly black optotypes on a white background. Contrast sensitivity is more subtle. Contrast sensitivity is the ability to see the difference between shades of black and white, mostly grays. This sensitivity is highly important in everyday life situations. Having normal contrast sensitivity leads to the ability to see shadows, to drive at night, and to tell the difference between objects. Without normal contrast sensitivity, many tasks that are taken for granted would not only be difficult, but may be impossible.
