ETDRS "2000" Series eye charts were designed to accurately monitor the gain or loss of acuity in patients with diabetic retinopathy over lengths of time. Their intense calibration reflects this use. The application of equally difficult lines, and optotypes, along with geometric progression, and correct distance calibration has made ETDRS acuity charts extremely reliable, repeatable, and necessary in the eye testing profession. ETDRS charts are the only charts supported and used by the National Eye Institute in research and clinical testing.
