Good Samaritan Health Center Atlanta

The Good Samaritan Health Center (“Good Sam”), a non-profit healthcare practice, was formed by Dr. Bill Warren in 1998 and opened for service in 1999, with a staff of eight, and a handful of volunteers. Based in Atlanta, Georgia, the Center has grown rapidly having over 17,500 patient visits in 2006.

Good Sam honored Dr. Barry Schirack in June 2008 for his volunteer services.  As an optometrist at the Center, Dr. Schirack has been taking care of the eyes of Good Sam patients for over three years. He comes to the Center every six to eight weeks on Thursdays, his day off.  Dr. Schirack first learned about Good Sam when Dr. Warren came to his professional society’s meeting to ask for volunteers.

Dr. Schirack not only brings his knowledge of optometry to Good Sam, he also is able to use his Spanish speaking skills.  Dr. Schirack says he loves the atmosphere of the Center because the staff is so “cool, calm, and collected.”  He appreciates Good Sam’s comprehensive medical care with doctors, dentists, and counselors all under one roof. He also is inspired by his patients, many of whom are immigrants who have traveled far and worked hard but still need just a little assistance that Good Sam can help provide.

The Good Samaritan Health Center is seeking Optometrists and Ophthalmologists volunteers to serve patients.  Not only are you able to practice medicine for the less fortunate, you are able to do it without the hassle of paper work or the aggravation of managed care.  Their volunteer schedule is very flexible, and they will work with you and your time constraints.

For information, you may visit Good Sam’s website at www.goodsamatlanta.org or contact Delise White, the volunteer coordinator at (404) 523-6571 extension 257, or [email protected].  Delise would be happy to speak with you and arrange a visit and tour of the Center.
