Filters which block specific spectra of light. They are mainly used to give better comfort sharpness and contrast but are also a protection against short-wave light.Blue blockingWhen the light passes through the lens of the eye the blue part of the spectra will spread causing what could be described as distortion on the retina. The purpose of a filter lens is to block this disturbing part of blue light. This is one of the main reasons why so many people who have tried filter-lenses experience a better comfort sharpness and contrast. Especially partially sighted people who are more dependent on the information they get from the retina which must be as clear and sharp as possible.ProtectionMost of the clinical studies today show that the short-wave UV- and bluelight has a damaging effect if it is allowed to pass through the eye-lens and on to the retina. How damaging it is will depend on the energy of the light which depends on the light’s wavelength. The shorter the wavelength the higher the energy is. As the diagram shows it is first of all the UV-light that is harmful to the eye but also the bluelight up to 460-470nm is today considered to be still harmful though to a lesser degree.

A perfect solution for outdoor use is to combine the filter-lens with a polarizing layer. There are two different layers available:Pol1 (light) » 65% GreyPol3 (dark) » 85% GreyPol1 is available as Plano Single Vision and D28. Pol3 is available as Plano Single Vision and progressive.The curves for the two different layers in combination with filters are presented in the diagrams.Transition lensesThe filters are also available with a transition layer. It changes from a light brown shade (10%) to about 75-80% within 1 min (depending a bit on the temperature outside). The filter effect remains the same.   A part of the optical deviceAn optical device and a filter often go hand in hand. The purpose of the optical device is to give the patient the needed magnification and a sharp image.
